Am Samstag, den 16. März wurde Fabricio Martins do Canto als Direktkandidat im Wahlkreis 76 von der Piratenpartei aufgestellt. Fabricio ist gebürtiger Brasilianer und hat 2004 die deutsche Staatsbürgschaft bekommen. Er vertritt die Piraten bereits als Mitglied im Integrationsbeirat Pankow, außerdem ist er stellvertretender Bürgerdeputierter des Integrationsauschusses der BVV Pankow für die Grünen. Er ist mit einer Hindu-Amerikanerin verheiratet und hat drei Kinder, die in Prenzlauer Berg geboren sind und dreisprachig aufwachsen. Beruflich hat er als Produktmanager unter anderem das tesa Power-Strips-System mitentwickelt. Nach der Wahl unterhielt sich Petra Wille, Bezirksbeauftragte in Pankow mit ihm.

Petra: Was hast du nach deinem Ausstieg gemacht?

Fabricio: Ich bin 10 Jahre gereist und habe mich auf ehrenamtliche Projekte für interkulturelle Bildung und für die Integration von Menschen mit Behinderungen in Indien, Brasilien und Berlin konzentriert. Im Jahr 2010 kam ich zurück nach Berlin und nach der Fukushima-Katastrophe habe ich mit Künstlerfreunden das Open Home Projekt für betroffene Familien aus Japan ins Leben gerufen.

Was wolltet ihr damit erreichen?

Alle sprachen nur über die Ereignisse, aber wir wollten den Menschen helfen, die dort gelebt haben. Dadurch haben einige Familien mit Kindern in Berlin ein neues Zuhause gefunden. Das war ein großartiges Beispiel von deutscher und Berliner Warmherzigkeit in einem Moment von Not.

Was machst du heute?

Ich bin Existenzgründer und arbeite gemeinsame mit meiner Frau bei dem Versuch, neue Gesellschaftsmodelle in die Praxis umzusetzen. Ein Beispiel ist unser „Mier“, das unter einer CC-Lizenz steht. Das ist ein neuer Ansatz, den wir mit der Absicht verfolgen, in der Wirtschaft Transparenz, Teilhabe und Nachhaltigkeit aktiv vorzuleben.

Warum kandidierst du für den Bundestag?

Ich kandidiere, weil ich mich in der Piratenpartei für Freiheit und Vielfalt einsetze und das weiterhin noch viel intensiver tun will. Ich tue das seit drei Jahren via Internet in Brasilien und lokal in Pankow, wo ich Bezirksbeauftragter war und direkt für das AGH kandidierte. Dazu wünsche ich mir, dass endlich ’normale Menschen‘ und Betroffene in der Politik Entscheidungen treffen können.

Was möchtest du konkret erreichen, wenn die Menschen dich wählen?

Ich wünsche mir, im Bundestag das Thema Wahlrecht für Alle voranzubringen.

Fangen wir mit den Kindern an: Für wen sollen wir nachhaltig handeln? Wer wird länger in diesem Land und auf diesem Planeten leben? Genau, die Kinder. Und genau deswegen finde ich ganz toll, dass die Piraten die Teilhabe von Kindern in demokratische Prozesse und Entscheidung so früh wie möglich anbieten wollen.

Weiterhin wäre ein Wahlrecht für Migrantinnen und Migranten – das sind allein in Berlin 480.000, und in Pankow fast 30.000 – großartig!

Außerdem ist mir eine Politik wichtig, die nicht nur für Deutschland, sondern auch international gerecht ist. Migrantinnen und Migranten, die in Deutschland leben, sind sich sehr bewusst über die Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und Ihrer Heimat.

Inwiefern?

Zum Beispiel exportiert Deutschland Atomkraftwerkstechnologie nach Brasilien. Mit einer Hermesbürgschaft sollte der Aufbau des Kraftwerks Angra III finanziert werden. Es ist so alt und gefährlich, dass es in Deutschland keine Baugenehmigung mehr bekäme. Wir von der Piratenpartei sind dagegen und unsere Liquid-Feedback-Initiative wurde von Piraten in Deutschland und Piraten in Brasilien unterstützt. Die Bedingungen für Geschäfte müssen in allen Bereichen fair sein, sowohl für Produzenten als auch für Konsumenten, egal ob in Pankow oder in anderen Ländern.

On Saturday, March 16th, Fabricio Martins do Canto was chosen as the Pirate Party’s direct candidate for Berlin’s electoral district 75. Fabricio is a native Brazilian and naturalized German citizen since 2004. He currently represents the Pirates as a member of Pankow’s integration advisory board. Aside from this he is also the substitute citizen deputy for the Green Party in the Integration Committee in the Pankow City Council. Fabricio and his Indo-American wife have three children who were born in Prenzlauer Berg and are growing up speaking three languages. Professionally, as former Product Manager he co-developed the tesa Power-strips-system. Following his election, Petra Wille, the Pankow regional representative spoke with him.

Q: What did you do after leaving (the corporate world)?

A: I concentrated on a variety of voluntary projects for inter-cultural education and for the inclusion of differently-abled people in India, Brazil and Berlin. Following the catastrophe in Fukushima, I started the Open Home Project together with a few artists to assist families in Japan who were affected by the disaster.

What did you aim to achieve with this?

Everyone was speaking about the event, but we wanted to help those who lived there. Through the project we were able to help some families with children find a new home in Berlin. It was a shining example of the warm-hearted nature of the Germans and Berliners who responded immediately to a global crisis.

What do you currently do?

I have started my own business, and together with my wife we are trying to create a new sustainable business model. An example of this is our ‚Mate Beer‘ that operates under a CC license. This is a new approach that we are intentionally pursuing to exemplify transparency, participation and sustainability in the economy.

Why are you running for the national elections?

I am candidating because I am committed to the party’s stance on freedom and diversity and I would like to carry this out in an intensive way. For the past three years, I have been networking with the Brazilian Pirate Party (via internet) and locally in Pankow, where I was the local representative for integration, and I stand for these multi-cultural ideals. In addition, I wish that ’normal people‘ will finally be addressed and can participate in political decisions.

What would you like to concretely achieve if the people elect you?

I would like to bring the theme of voting rights for all into the national politics. Starting with children. For whom should we be living sustainably? Who will live in this country, on this planet for a longer time? Children, and precisely for this reason, it’s great that the Pirates would like to offer participation in the democratic processes and decisions to children from as young an age as possible.

Besides this, voting rights for immigrants, who number 480,000 in Berlin (out of which 30,000 live in Pankow alone) would be fantastic! Above all, I find it important that politics transcends a national level, it should not only be for Germany, but should be fair on an international level. The immigrants living in Germany are very conscious about the ties between Germany and their homelands.

What do you mean?

For example, Germany is exporting it’s nuclear energy technology to Brazil. The construction of the nuclear power plant Angra III will be financed with and export credit guarantee. The technology being used is so old and dangerous that it is not permitted to be built in Germany. The German Pirates are against this construction in our Liquid Feedback initiative and there are many Pirates in Brazil who are supporting our proposal. The terms for businesses should be fair on all levels; for the both producers and consumers, regardless of if they live in Pankow or other countries.

Neste último sabado, dia 16 de Março, Fabricio Martins do Canto foi eleito o Candidato Direto do Partido Pirata Alemão para o 76o distrito eleitoral de Berlim, equivalendo ao Distrito de Pankow. Fabrício é Brasileiro e obteve a cidadania Alemã em 2004 para exercer seus Direitos Políticos neste país. Ele representa os Piratas como membro do Conselho de Integração em Pankow. Afora isto, é Deputado Cidadão Suplente na Comissão de Integracao da Comuna (BVV) de Pankow pelo Partido Verde. Ele é casado com uma Indu-americana e tem com ela três filhos tri-língues, nascidos em Prenzlauer Berg. Ele é formado em administração de empresas e foi gerente de produto e criou diferente produtos como os tesa Power-Strips System. O que você fez depois de ter abandonado a carreira como gerente de marketing?

Eu viajei por dez anos e trabalhei como voluntário criando projetos para educação intercultural e integração de pessoas com deficiências na India, no Brasil e em Berlim. Depois da catástofre em Fukushima eu comecei com amigos artistas o Open Home Projekt para apoiar os afetados de lá.“
